Statement of Faith
Cross Connections of Tippecanoe County is an organization of dedicated counseling professionals who hold the Christian faith.
Humanity’s Creation and Fall
We believe God is Father, Son, and Holy Spirit; three Persons in perfect relationship with one another: Creator, Redeemer, and Sanctifier of the world. He created everything seen and unseen by His spoken Word. His Word today is a word that creates, restores, and makes right what is wrong.
Humanity was created perfect in the image of their Creator. Man and woman were created perfect in every way possible, created in perfect relationship with God, their Creator, and created in perfect relationship with one another (Genesis 1-2).
The man and the woman were deceived into thinking they could be like their Creator, they could take the place of the Creator. They desired what did not belong to them. This desire led to rebellion and broken relationships. Relationship to God was damaged beyond their ability to repair it and relationship to one another was damaged beyond their ability to repair it (Genesis 3).
Humanity’s Brokenness
We believe humanity’s disobedience resulted in a broken soul. Lives are broken physically, emotionally, mentally, and spiritually, doing what hurts self and being hurt by others. Humanity now seeks happiness, fulfillment, restoration, and purpose, and cannot find them in themselves. The consequences of the original rebellion against God are still manifested in broken lives, physically, emotionally, mentally, and spiritually. Mental illness, though not a result of an individual sin or sinful lifestyle, may manifest itself in sinful thoughts or actions. There is forgiveness for these through the blood of Christ.
God wants to restore the soul and the perfect relationship with His creatures, which was broken. True happiness, fulfillment, restoration, and purpose can only be found in God alone.
Humanity’s Redemption and Restoration
We believe God became one with humanity to redeem them back to Himself. God the Son sacrificed Himself to death. By the death of God the Son, the sins of all people were paid in full, and by His resurrection, the world is reconciled to God (Romans 4-5).
God the Holy Spirit uses instruments (God’s Word, Holy Baptism, Holy Absolution, Holy Communion) to create and sustain faith in God and draw all people to Himself. This faith receives the gifts God freely gives: forgiveness of sins and eternal life, restoring the relationship between God and humanity. Complete and perfect restoration between God and humanity will take place on the Last Day.
When our Lord went into the wilderness following His baptism, He withstood all the temptations of Satan, every temptation known to humanity. Now our Lord comes to all people in the wilderness of their lives and redeems them.
Humanity’s Value and Worth
We believe there is value and worth in every client we treat, for each one has been created in the image of God and redeemed by God. Entering the wilderness of our client’s lives, sitting with them in their suffering and sorrow, and drawing upon our lived experiences, we have and show empathy for their pain and sorrow. This empathy displays unconditional positive regard for them, even as God loves them unconditionally.
Humanity’s Mental Health Treatment by Christian Counselors
We believe, as Christian Counselors, counseling and psychotherapy modalities and interventions are only part of the plan to treat our clients holistically in mind and spirit. Intercessory prayer, exploring God’s Word, and encouragement to explore one’s faith are also useful tools when treating a client’s mind and spirit. Encouragement to seek out the spiritual guidance of the client’s pastor may supplement the counseling process.
Only God, as the Creator, Redeemer, and Sanctifier of all, can restore His creation and bring hope and healing to the lives of our clients. God can use us to impact the lives of our clients as we meet them where they are in their struggles, treat them with respect, share the love of God with them, and, when appropriate, share our faith and show them what God has done for us.
Helping clients not only mentally and emotionally, but also spiritually, is the greater work we can accomplish. We are Christian Counselors, and this we believe.
